It depends on the reason for the visit. First time visits can take 60-90 minutes. Cataract, glaucoma and/or retinal evaluations may take up to 2 hours if specialized testing is required. Routine follow up visits can be as short as 30 minutes, but can vary.

Dilation uses eye drops to make the pupil larger so the back of he eye can be thoroughly examined. Your vision may be blurry and you will be more sensitive to light. Depending on your age and color of your eye, it can last from 2-6 hours.

Our office accepts medical insurance plans. We do NOT accept vision insurance. 

We accept Medicare and most major medical plans including, but not limited to Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Aetna, Cigna. We do not accept any Medicaid insurance plans.

Just like gray hair, cataracts are a natural part of aging. It is a clouding of the lens in the eye. Symptoms include blurry, filmy, hazy vision, and glare. Sometimes it can be mores subtle, like  a feeling that "I just don't see as well I used to". 

During cataract surgery, the natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with an artificial lens implant. It is safe, effective, and typically takes less than 30 minutes.

Manual cataract surgery, which requires Dr. Gupta to use handheld blades and basic techniques to remove the cataract, IS covered by Medicare and commercial insurance plans. This includes a standard MONOFOCAL lens and you WILL need glasses after surgery.

Laser cataract surgery and/or the multifocal lens is NOT covered by any insurances.

Laser cataract surgery allows Dr. Gupta to do surgery without any blades. She uses FEMTOSECOND laser technology to design a customized treatment plan that allows for increased precision and efficiency, including astigmatism correction.

It can be combined with both the monofocal and multifocal lens implant. It is NOT covered by Medicare and commercial insurance plans. 

COVERED BY INSURANCE: standard MONOFOCAL lens.

You WILL need glasses after surgery, for reading, distance, or both, depending on your individual eye.

NOT COVERD BY INSURANCE: 

1. MULTIFOCAL lens - full range of vision, you can expect to do about 90% of your activities without glasses. 

2. TORIC lens - corrects astigmatism (available in both monofocal and multifocal)

MONOFOCAL LENS - will definitely need glasses

MULTIFOCAL LENS - can do about 90% of activities without glasses, including reading. You may experience a "glow" or "halo" around lights at night. Most people get used to this within a couple of months as your brain adapts to the new lenses. Most appropriate for eyes that are otherwise healthy (for example, no glaucoma or macular degeneration).

Glaucoma is an optic nerve disease in which there is thinning/loss of nerve tissue that causes vision loss. It is commonly associated with high eye pressure, but you can still develop glaucoma even with normal eye pressure.

Glaucoma is treated by lower eye pressure: eye drops, laser treatments, dissolvable implants, and/or surgery.

Narrow angle glaucoma is a subtype of glaucoma in which the drain in the front of the eye is shallow. This can lead to glaucoma. Narrow angle glaucoma is typically treated with a prophylactic laser treatment called a laser peripheral iridotomy, which is done in the office and typically takes about 5 minutes. 

SLT is an in-office laser treatment that takes less than 5 minutes to perform. it is typically equal to one eye drop in terms of lowering eye pressure and can be used first line instead of eye drops. There are no preparations before or restrictions after the procedure. On average, the treatment effects lasts about two years and may be repeated.

There are different types of glaucoma surgery - minimally invasive glaucoma surgery including the iStent, OMNI, and Hyrdrus micro stent. For more advanced glaucoma, filtering surgery such as a trabeculectomy, tube shunt, and/or Xen gel stent may be required.

"Routine" dry eye can often be treated with over the counter artificial tears and lubricating drops. If drops are not enough or are too difficult to keep putting in, Dr. Gupta can insert dry eye plugs that help to maintain the moisture on the surface of your eye so you do not have to rely on eye drops for lubrication.

When dry eye is associated with ocular surface inflammation, it becomes important to treat the oil glands along the eyelid margin as well using cleansing wipes and/or sprays, or with the TearCare® System.

TearCare® is a deep cleaning proceudre for the eyelids that involves applied heat therapy to the eyelids followed by a cleaning out of the meibomian/oil glands along the eyelid margin - similar to a facial.
